Ingredients
- 6 apples, medium sized (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp are great for their tart flavor)
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 cup white chocolate – Ghrardelli white vanilla flavored melting wafers (these melt best)
- 10 oz caramels
- 1 tbsp cream or coconut cream (to thin out caramel)
- 6 wooden candy apple skewers
- 1 cup toasted pumpkin seeds (or substitute with your favorite nuts)
- Halloween sprinkles for decoration
- edible candy eyes (candy eyes are fun!)
- wax paper
Instructions
- Prep the Apples: Start by washing and drying your apples really well. Insert wooden skewers into the center so that they stand upright. This makes dipping a breeze!
- Prep your workstation: Start by laying down a piece of wax paper and a skewered apple. Set out any nuts, sprinkles and decorations you plan to use. Once the caramel and chocolate are melted you want to try to work quickly before they harden.
- Melt the Caramel: Unwrap the caramel squares and place them into a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each interval, until smooth and melted. If the caramel feels too thick, stir in 1 teaspoon of cream at a time, up to 1 tablespoon, until it’s at a drizzling consistency.
- Melt the Chocolate: In two separate microwave-safe bowls, melt the dark and white chocolate chips, again using 30-second intervals and stirring until smooth.
- Decorate the Apples: Here’s where the fun begins! Dip or drizzle the apples with caramel first, then add the melted chocolate over the top. You can use a spoon to get creative with drips and drizzles. While the caramel and chocolate are still sticky, sprinkle with decorations—candy eyes, Halloween sprinkles, or crunchy pumpkin seeds.
- To reheat Caramel or Chocolate: If they harden while decorating, microwave using 10 second intervals and stirring or adding a teaspoon of cream at a time until you have a drizzling consistency again.
- Cool & Enjoy: Place the finished apples on wax paper sprinkled with nuts or seeds to prevent sticking. Let them set either on the counter or in the fridge until everything is firm. Then, enjoy your delicious chocolate caramel apples!
Bonus Tip: Extra Chocolate or Caramel Leftover?
Don’t let that extra melted goodness go to waste! Stir in a bit of your favorite milk (dairy or plant-based) or coffee into the remaining chocolate or caramel, heat it up, and enjoy a homemade hot chocolate or caramel steamer. The caramel is also great with hot apple cider. 🍫☕ Perfect for sipping while the apples set!
