7 Tips for Better Mental Health

Hey, welcome to Tine + Tumbler! With May being Mental Health Awareness month, we’re diving into wellness one step at a time, starting with our mental health. We hope you’re ready to join us on this journey toward healthier, happier lives.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences how we think, feel, and act, shaping our ability to handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. It’s what makes up our inner peace and balance, and is so important in helping us lead fulfilling lives.

Why is Mental Health Important?

Just as we prioritize our physical health, nurturing our mental well-being is equally important. It determines how we build resilience, navigate life’s challenges, and appreciate its joys. In today’s chaotic world, investing in our mental health isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for holistic wellness.

Understanding Mental Health Issues: Depression and Anxiety

Depression and anxiety are two common mental health disorders that can have a huge impact in our lives. Depression may manifest as persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or loss of interest, while anxiety often involves excessive worry, fear, or apprehension. Recognizing these signs is crucial for seeking support and treatment. It’s ok to need and ask for help.

How to Improve Your Mental Health

Cultivating a positive mental state is an ongoing journey, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach, we are all unique and experience life in our own way. However, incorporating self care into our lives through mindfulness practices, regular physical activity, nourishing our bodies with healthy foods, and building meaningful connections with others are powerful steps towards improving our mental health.

7 Tips for Better Mental Health

  1. Exercise releases feel good chemicals in your body like serotonin and endorphins that can boost your mood while reducing anxiety, stress and depression. Serotonin can promote feelings of happiness, well-being and a sense of belonging while controlling appetite and helping regulate sleep patterns. Endorphins can alleviate pain, reduce stress, boost mood and induce feelings of euphoria. If you aren’t a fan of the gym find an activity you enjoy, running, yoga, hiking and yes even active sex counts here!
  2. Eat healthy foods and stay hydrated. A balanced diet provides the fuel you need for your body to function properly. Eating regular healthy meals can help regulate your blood sugar preventing ‘crashes’, support optimal gut health and maintain cognitive function.
  3. Human connection and spending quality time with friends and family can reduce feelings of loneliness and depression and provide a sense of belonging and support when you need it.
  4. Set goals. Having one thing to focus on next, when you’re overwhelmed, can reduce anxiety. Celebrating both small and big accomplishments can build a sense of worth and improve self esteem. Set reasonable goals starting small, don’t get caught up comparing yourself.
  5. Journaling is pretty simple, just write down what’s on your mind. This can help you gain a clearer perspective of your situation, track your moods and help identify triggering situations. This process can help decrease anxiety, stress, depression and blood pressure. The reduction in stress can help boost your immune system.
  6. Sleep is crucial in maintaining good mental health and reducing stress. Adults should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to feel rested and refreshed. Adequate sleep can help regulate your mood and emotions while improving memory, concentration, productivity and decision making.
  7. Find joy in something that makes you happy and relaxed whether that’s a creative outlet or getting outside. Focusing on the positive aspects in your life can shift your mindset away from negativity and allow you space to recharge and reset.

In general just do MORE of what makes you feel good and LESS of what makes you feel shitty!

Embracing Emotional Health

Emotional health complements our mental well-being, encompassing our ability to manage and express emotions constructively. It’s about cultivating self-awareness, practicing self-care, and embracing vulnerability as strength.
