Hawaiian Chex Mix

Hawaiian Chex Mix

Growing up in Hawaii, I was surrounded by the most incredible treats and snacks—many of which you’d never find at a typical grocery store. These special treats were often reserved for parties, craft fairs, or sold by local families on the side of the road. One of my all-time favorites is Hawaiian Chex Mix, also known as Furikake Chex Mix or Hurricane Chex Mix.

Every family seems to have their own take on this snack, each adding their own favorite ingredients and making it their own. That’s part of what makes this mix so special—it’s endlessly customizable and always delicious. In our household, we love making this snack mix and adding our personal favorites. The best part? It makes a lot, stores well in airtight containers, and is perfect for road trips, sharing or gifting during the holidays or any special occasion.

This recipe I’m sharing with you today is the one I’ve perfected over time. It’s sweet, savory, and oh-so-addictive. Whether you’re looking for a new snack to add to your rotation or a homemade gift idea that’s sure to impress, this Hawaiian Chex Mix is a winner.

Ingredients

  • 12.5 oz Honeycomb cereal
  • 12 oz Rice Chex cereal
  • 14 oz Wheat Chex cereal
  • 7.5 oz Bugles
  • 3 cups chopped macadamia nuts
  • 2 cups bagel chips, sesame chips, banana chips, nuts (optional)
  • 1 bottle Furikake

Sauce

  • 1 cup butter
  • cups sugar
  • 1 cup karo syrup
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 5 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbs worcestershire sauce

Instructions

Prep

  • If you don't have disposable aluminum pans you can also use cookie sheets. To prepare cookie sheets, top 4 large cookie sheets with parchment paper and set aside. Preheat oven to 225℉ (110℃.)
  • In the aluminum pans (or 2-4 of your largest mixing bowls), mix cereals, bugles and macadamia nuts together gently and set aside.

Sauce

  • In a large sauce pan, add all of the sauce ingredients and cook over medium heat stirring constantly until the mixture starts to gently boil and thickens slightly-do not over cook or it could burn.

Mix

  • Pour sauce evenly over the cereal mixture and gently stir until combined and cereals are evenly coated.
  • Bake for 15 minutes at 225℉, remove from oven, evenly sprinkle furikake mixture over cereal and stir to combine. Return to oven and bake for another 15 minutes, stirring cereal and rotating pans every 15 minutes. Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes total.
  • Remove from oven, stir and let cool. Once cooled, make sure the chex mix is dry and crisp, if not you can bake for additional time. Store in airtight containers and enjoy.

Enjoy & Share: This mix is not only great for snacking but also makes an excellent homemade gift. Pack it up in festive bags or jars, and you’ve got a thoughtful, delicious present that brings a little taste of Hawaii to your loved ones.

Happy snacking, and aloha! 🌺
