Brown Butter Orange Blossom Rice Krispie Treats (Easy + Elevated)

These brown butter orange blossom Rice Krispie treats are the grown-up version of the classic — nutty browned butter, a whisper of orange blossom water, and bright citrus zest stirred into the marshmallow mix. They’re my go-to homemade sweet for school events, housewarming gifts, road trips, parties, breakfast (yes, sometimes it’s necessary), and every once in a while, a whole pan just for me.
The whole batch comes together in about 15 minutes of hands-on time, plus an hour to set. If you’ve never tried brown butter Rice Krispie treats before, the deep, caramel-nutty flavor is a revelation – and the orange blossom takes them somewhere unexpected and a little floral, without tasting like perfume.
Why you’ll love these Rice Krispie Treats
- One pot, six ingredients, no baking
- Brown butter adds nutty depth without extra effort
- Orange blossom water + citrus zest give classic Rice Krispie treats a fresh, sophisticated twist
- Endlessly adaptable — sub orange juice concentrate, lilikoi (passionfruit) jelly, or any citrus zest you have on hand
Ingredient Notes
Butter — Use good butter. This recipe leans on browned butter for its flavor, so the quality matters. European-style butter works beautifully if you have it.
Mini marshmallows — Mini melt faster and more evenly than the full-size ones. Fresh marshmallows make for a softer, chewier treat.
Rice Krispie cereal — Stick with the real thing or a comparable crispy rice cereal. Generic puffed rice can go soggy.
Orange blossom water — Found in the international or baking aisle of most grocery stores, or any Middle Eastern market. A little goes a long way.
Orange essential oil — I use doTERRA Wild Orange essential oil but Nielsen Massey (affiliate link) is also a great brand. Make sure whatever brand you use is food-grade. Optional but worth it for a brighter citrus pop.
Orange zest — Fresh zest brings color, fragrance, and a bit of texture. Microplane works best.
Easy substitutions
- No orange blossom water? Use orange juice concentrate for a sweeter, juicier version.
- For a tropical riff, swap the orange blossom for lilikoi (passionfruit) jelly and use lime zest.
- Any citrus zest works — lemon, lime, blood orange, Meyer lemon, yuzu.

Equipment
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup butter
- 7 cups mini marshmallows
- 5 1/2 cups Rice Krispie cereal
- 1 tsp orange blossom water
- 5 drops orange essential oil
- 1 tsp orange zest
Instructions
- In a large pot over very low heat, melt the butter and continue cooking gently until it turns golden brown and smells nutty, about 5–7 minutes. Stir frequently and don't walk away — brown butter goes from perfect to burnt quickly.
- Add the marshmallows and stir gently on low until completely melted and smooth.
- Take the pan off the heat. Stir in the orange blossom water, orange zest, and orange essential oil until combined.
- Add the Rice Krispie cereal and stir until everything is evenly coated.
- Pour into a greased or parchment-lined baking dish and gently press into an even layer. (Don't pack too firmly — that's what makes them dense.)
- Let sit until cooled and firm, about an hour if you can stand to wait that long.
- Zest a bit more orange over top, cut into squares and enjoy.
Every time I share these with someone, they’re an instant favorite. As I’m typing this up, I’m already getting hounded by friends to send the recipe so they can whip up a batch on their own. Make a pan once and you’ll see why.
